Help Children Beat Cancer: National Walking Month with UK charity Gift of Life
I’m a scientist working in the field of regenerative medicine and neurobiology, seeking a cure for Parkinson’s disease. But first and foremost, I am mamma, and I know in my heart how important it is to receive timely medical treatment when your child urgently needs it.
Every day I walk along the sea on one of the islands in the Stockholm archipelago, where I live.
Each May, Gift of Life, a UK-based charity supporting children in their fight against cancer, organizes a fundraising campaign, National Walking Month, to encourage people to walk every day to improve their health and to support fundraising for children and young patients in CIS countries (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and other former Soviet republics) who desperately need life-saving medicines to fight oncological and hematological diseases.
Over the years, Gift of Life has grown its mission by working closely with its partner charities – Podari Zhizn in Russia (founded in 2006) and Podari.Life in the U.S. (founded in 2015). Together, the partner charities have supported more than 97,000 children undergoing timely and life-saving care.
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death among children worldwide. While around 80–90% of children with cancer survive in Western countries, in CIS countries the survival rate is below 70%.
Behind these sobering numbers are the lives of children lost, the broken hearts of parents, and deep grief.
How can it be so hard to save a child, and what can we do about it? Stay compassionate toward others, step in when a sick child needs help and show kindness to those who suffer, I believe.
Every day I walk along the sea on one of the islands in the Stockholm archipelago, where I live. But now though, these walks have taken on a deeper meaning – they’re my way of showing support for the incredible and life-saving work Gift of Life does for children.
I encourage everyone to participate in the National Walking Month to keep healthy not only our bodies, but also to show kindness and care towards most vulnerable – sick kids.
Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a difference.
