Step by Step: Walking Together This National Walking Month

National Walking Month takes place every May and encourages people to walk more to improve physical health, boost mental wellbeing, and support a more sustainable way of living. It’s a simple, free way to stay active while connecting with your community and the outdoors.

Walking is something many of us do every day without much thought. But when we walk with intention, it becomes something more powerful and can support children and families facing the unimaginable.

Why walking matters

Walking is one of the most accessible ways to support both physical and mental wellbeing. Just a short walk each day can help reduce stress, improve mood, and strengthen overall health. It gives us time to pause, reflect, and recharge.

For many of the children and families supported by Gift of Life, movement is not always simple. Cancer treatment can be long, exhausting, and isolating. That’s why choosing to walk freely, purposefully can also be an act of solidarity.

Turning steps into support

This National Walking Month, we invite you to turn your daily steps into something meaningful.

By taking part in a personal walking challenge, organising a group walk, or simply sharing your journey with friends and family, you can help raise vital funds for children in need of life-saving treatment.

You can get involved in a way that works for you:

  • Set your own challenge – Choose a goal that fits your routine whether it’s walking 20 minutes a day (#Try20), completing 5k daily, or simply moving more each day.
  • Organise a walk – Bring together friends, family, or colleagues and walk with purpose.
  • Share your journey – Tell your community why you’re supporting Gift of Life. Encourage them to donate, join you, or start their own challenge and don’t forget to tag Gift of Life on social media.

Every step you take can help fund life-saving treatment, essential medicines, and access to expert care.
