Verse and Music Give the Gift of Life
On the 12th of January 2014, Chulpan Khamatova’s charity performance, “The Hour When You Leap Into Souls As Into Arms”, will take place at the Criterion Theatre at the heart of London, supporting children in the care of the Podari Zhizn and Gift of Life foundations.
“The Hour When You Leap Into Souls As Into Arms” is a new solo performance by People’s Artist of Russia Chulpan Khamatova. She will read from the works of Russia’s greatest 20th Century female poets, Marina Tsvetaeva and Bella Akhmadulina, with a saxophone (Veronika Kozhuharova) and piano (Polina Kondratkova) accompaniment. The evening of music and poetry will feature the works “Mother and Music”, “Lessons of Music” and “A Tale About Rain”.
All who love the theatre, music and poetry will be able to have an encounter with beauty and to see the actress play against type. According to Chulpan herself, “this isn’t a play – it’s our fierce desire to share the possibility of escaping a hollow, numb reality. Our ‘contemporary’ trio – the saxophone player Veronika Kozhuharova, the pianist Polina Kondratkova and the actress Chulpan Khamatova – will be led by the hand by two giants among women, the two great poets Marina Tsvetaeva and Bella Akhmadulina. It is very daring to read these prose and poetry texts on the stage, but the joy they bring will outweigh any fear. We will shut our eyes and, in the end, dive into this beatuiful domain – together with you!” But contrary to the actress’s passionate statement, this will in fact be a musical, with its own dramatic plot based around poetry.
The performance had a very successful premiere on the 23rd of February 2013 in St Petersburg, with subsequent tours in Tallinn, Riga and Kiev. This will be the first time it is performed in London.
We would like to thank Roman Abramovich and Kaspersky Lab for their assistance and financial support.
All funds gained from ticket sales will go to the Gift of Life foundation to purchase the expensive foreign medicines needed by children with oncohaematological illnesses in Russian hospitals.
