Sasha was 12 years old. This affectionate, friendly boy was very sensitive to the character traits and moods of people surrounding him. He avoided some people but wanted to be friends with others. Keen intuition and friendliness are typical of children with Down’s Syndrome. The family learned of the diagnosis when Sasha was a year and a half. They moved to the Moscow region so that Sasha could go to a specialised preschool institution for such kids. Sasha’s mother and father did not hide their son’s diagnosis from anybody, and loved the boy dearly.
After two cycles of standard chemotherapy, Sasha developed an allergy to one of the key chemotherapy medications, Asparaginase. The doctors decided to replace Asparaginase with Erwinase. In March 2011, Podari Zhizn and Gift of Life submitted a joint application to the Raisa Gorbachev Foundation, which paid the pharmacy for the medication directly. 6 packs of Erwinase were delivered to Russia so that Sasha’s treatment could be continued.
To our deep regret, Sasha has passed away on 5 August 2012
