Marathon runner raises $5,000 for medicine for sick children using JustGiving!

It is a well-known fact that raising money for charity has long since become an essential part of marathons throughout the world. But a recent private marathon fundraiser set a stunning new record for our foundation. We would like to introduce you to Victor Baybekov, marathon runner for charity!

For Victor, the Barcelona marathon was his fifth experience of marathon as a sport (though his first as a fundraising activity), so he decided to set the goal at $5,000. His choice of beneficiary was the product of some consideration: “I want to only spend my resources in directions where they will have a measurable effect,” Victor tells us. “I read a great deal about juvenile cancer, and consulted a number of doctors. I learned that juvenile cancer can be treated, and often fully cured. That’s why the “Podari Zhizn” foundation was an obvious choice.”

In order to ensure transparency, Victor started a page with a description of the event on http://www.justgiving.org, a popular British online fundraising platform which automatically transfers all funds raised to the chosen charity. He selected Gift of Life as the beneficiary.

Victor went on to share links to his JustGiving page ((http://www.justgiving.com/Victor-Baybekov-Barcelona) with friends and throughout social networks.

Before starting his campaign, Victor estimated that he’d be able to raise the first thousand dollars fairly easily, but that it would take about three weeks to reach another $3,000. Even so, he couldn’t be completely sure that his fundraising would succeed…

The results exceeded all expectations: 82% of the goal was raised before the marathon, and 100% upon its completion!

It is worth mentioning that Victor is an economist by education, and a financier by trade, so he decided to analyse the sources of donation in detail. In total, 40 people supported the event, of whom the overwhelming majority were personal acquaintances. The biggest sums were donated by workers in the finance sector, with donations varying from $30 to $305.

“Thanks to the campaign, I’ve gathered invaluable experience and information on how fundraising mechanisms work. I’ve learned from my mistakes and observed the psychological specifics of the process. I hope to make use of this experience in the future!”

The Barcelona marathon also set a personal record for Victor’s heart rate/running speed ratio – congratulations, Victor!

The JustGiving system is perfectly suited to the most varied fundraising events – from sports competitions to birthdays and corporate events – and all funds donated through it automatically go straight to the foundation, with Gift Aid applied.

Gift of Life has benefited from such events before, but Victor’s initiative is the most successful to date, and we hope that it will inspire others to raise funds in aid of our young charges through JustGiving. We would also like to thank everyone who supported Victor and made his success possible.

The funds raised will be used to purchase Erwinase for the children in our care ((http://www.giftoflife.eu/what-we-do/medication/).
